NPW Contracting, Inc. in the Beginning
Nancy Plimpton incorporated NPW Contracting, Inc. on November 16, 1989 with the intention of being an above and below grade waterproofing specialty contractor. This would include civil, commercial and architectural projects. Nancy had knowledge of civil expansion devices and included providing and installing that product as part of the scope in NPW’s portfolio. Architectural expansion devices came onboard almost immediately. All the industry knowledge came from helping a manufacturer’s representative develop many of the products we use today.
Nancy set up shop in her basement with a computer, tractor feed printer, ‘tissue paper’ fax machine and her home telephone. Her first effort was to get certified as a Women Business Enterprise (WBE), a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and a Small Business Enterprise (SBE). It was obvious that Nancy was a woman, and the business was very small, but proving that she had experience to run a business and had the knowledge to be able to call NPW a specialty contractor was something else. The City and County of Denver was the first certification followed by CDOT and RTD over three years later. In 2017 NPW became certified by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).
Josh and Helen became part of NPW in 1993. Josh played a huge role in coordinating the field work and Helen single-handedly dealt with the financial end of the business, insurances, and certified payroll.
By virtue of Helen and Josh’s involvement, NPW became a family owned/operated business. Over the years many employees, even those today, have said that working at NPW is like being part of a family.
In 2014 Helen and Josh bought the Company when Nancy retired.
From Nancy’s basement to North Cherokee Street Santa Fe Drive and now 39th Ave, Nancy, Helen and Josh always felt that NPW was a home away from home.
